Arrested for Forjrery. A white mau, calling .himself Geo. Harris, has been trying to play some sharp practice on Messrs. lJehrcnds & Munroe, of this city. Ho camej here ab jut three weeks ago and put up at a private boarding house, on Front street. bjut a week ago he stopped in at Messrs. Bchrends & Munrocs mrni .urc store and stated that he j was a ship-carpenter aud had borne to this city from Newbern, where he had been working for some time. Ho stated that he liked the looks of the town and had concluded to stay here, and would send off for his family. Ho asked toy be 8ho wn some furniture, which ho said he would want. Harris made notes of tho prices in a memorandum 'book and said he-would come-in and get the arti cles when his wife arrived. He called in at Messrs. Behrends & Mun- roo's yesterday and . stated that ho had come to purchase the I furniture the selected prices amounting to $41, and gave as payment a check for $160, signed . Geo. Allen & Co. Ho said he worked for these gentlemen at New bern, and they gave him their check for that amount, for labor performed. He asked to be given currency, . for the amount. 119. which was to come to him as change. - This Messrs. Behrends & Munroe refused to-do; but gave him their chock for the balance with the un derstandingthatU "should be dated the Hth. instead of tho' 11th, the day on which it was drawn, i "lno wny Harris asked why -that was, ami Was told that It was a precautionary; " ideas - uro and would prevent him from : cash ing it until the check', signed Goo. Al len & Co. could be certified. He inter posed no objection and in , fact readily agreed to it; ' ' : " Messrs Behrends & Munroo drew, tho check but in doing so made a slight mis take. Infilling it lip thoy wrote one hundred and , nineteen . ffojbarsy ; but in filiiDg tho figures on the corner of tiie heck, .put them dowrr"$I41. Tho man took the chock and stepped , out, telling the gcntleme JLhal ho would .rcjra In the mbmragand lot them 'know where to send the furniture. Mr. Behrends, in almost a minuto after, remeuiberod that ho had made a mistake and went to the door to call Harris back,, but he was not to be seen in any direction, Mr. B. then went immediately io the Bank of New Hanover and stopped the payment of the chock and asked the officers to telegraph to Geo. Allen & Co.. of Newbern, who are well known throughout the State as largo 'hardware dealers, in referenco to tho check which they had received. A Utile after ft nVlockn about three aours after the checks had been exchanged, an answer was i re ceived to the effect that the check was a forgery. A warrant was issued fer the arrest of Harris, and .officers were on Ma lnnVjmt for him Monday night, but could not find him. Yesterday morn ing the approaches to the Bank of piew Hanover were closely watcneuyana about 11 o'clock, Harris was seen ap- tha Bank. Mr. Behrends atcDDcd un. and Harris said, "I wll let you know to-morrow where to send tha furniture." The man was promptly charge of fonrery. i He denied that his name was Harris. When committed to jail, he gave his namo as J. M. .Collier. The; check which was given him on Monday was found on his person, but had been al tered. The dato had -been changed from the Hth to tha 12th, and tho one hundred and nineteen dollars" had been chanrredto "one hundred and forty-one to correspond wjth the figures $141 in tha corner of the check. , A card, bear- inir the name J.M. Collier, Cedar Keys Florida, was. also 'found on his per- . , ? A 7 wm wru ntl son. Tnere navo rved on him since his arrest, j al growing out of the charge of forgery on which he was arrested.
